Yesterday we had a very exciting visit to Kirkwall Airport as part of our Flight topic. We had a super afternoon and saw lots of interesting things.
When we first arrived we met Neil who helped arrange the trip and spoke to us about safety at the airport.
We then got to go and see one of the planes - this was very exciting as this is the first time a school trip have been allowed to do this so we felt very lucky. We had to go through security first which was interesting and we learned that if you have anything metal in your pockets or on your clothes the alarm might go off.
On board the SAAB 340, which had flown into Kirkwall Airport from Edinburgh earlier in the day. We learned that this plane is 24 years old and was made in Sweden.
We then had some time to ask Neil lots of questions about the airport and how planes work.
The second part of our trip was to the Fire Station at the airport.
We got to try in some of the uniform.
We also got to see a jet boat which is used if there is an emergency in the water.
We then all got to sit in the fire engine and to try out the siren.
We also found out a bit about the different equipment that the use.
This is the room they use to watch the airport and runway to make sure everything is okay.
We had a great afternoon at the airport - thanks to everyone who made this trip possible!
